U.S. Customs Officer Moving Guide: Interactive Platform
This project focuses on designing a complete relocation guidance platform for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), built to help officers and their families navigate a duty station move with confidence. The goal was to take a stressful, paperwork-heavy life event and turn it into a clear, supportive digital journey one that surfaces everything an officer needs to know about a new community before they pack a single box.
The vision was to move away from the cold, bureaucratic feel of typical government websites and create something warm, trustworthy, and human-centered a platform that treats officers not as case numbers but as families making one of the biggest decisions of their careers.
Challenge
Government Sites Feel Cold and Hard to Navigate — Most federal portals overwhelm users with dense paragraphs, outdated layouts, and no real visual hierarchy. The challenge was to design a CBP-branded experience that still feels official and trustworthy but is genuinely pleasant and intuitive to use.
Relocation Decisions Involve Many Variables — Officers don't just need an address they need to know about commute times, rental prices, school ratings, crime rates, climate, diversity, nearby grocery stores, clinics, and what current officers actually say about living there. Surfacing all of this without overwhelming the user was a core challenge.
Serving Officers and Their Families A CBP move affects spouses and children too. The platform had to speak to the officer evaluating a Facility Finder result, the spouse researching schools and child care, and the family comparing two neighborhoods side by side all without fragmenting the experience.
Trust at Every Step — Government users are skeptical of polished websites that feel like marketing. The interface had to feel official, neutral, and informational while still being modern and welcoming.
Solution
Insight-Rich Neighborhood Pages — Each city page (like "Living in Donna, Texas") opens with a real skyline photo, a clear summary line ("A popular choice for Weslaco Station officers and their families"), and a Quick Facts grid showing Commute, Avg. 3BR rental, Diversity rating, Crime Rating, Population, and Nightlife Score — giving officers a complete snapshot in seconds.
Real Voices from the Field — "What officers say" testimonial cards and the dedicated Agent Voices section on the homepage put real CBP personnel front and center, building trust through peer experience rather than marketing copy.
Facility Finder with Smart Filters — A dedicated search page with Sector, City, County, and Distance dropdowns plus a "Use My Location" shortcut helps officers narrow down processing centers, ports of entry, and field offices instantly. Each result card shows facility type, available positions, address, and contact details.
Lifestyle Snapshot Tabs — Grocery Stores, Clinics, and Local Spots are organized into tabbed cards with real photos, hours, ratings, and drive time, so families can immediately picture daily life in the new community.
Comparative Decision Tools — The "Compare With Others" CTA and Explore Nearby Cities carousel (Weslaco, Mercedes, Alamo) let officers weigh multiple options side by side instead of researching each one in isolation.
Step-by-Step Journey Framework — The "What to Expect on Your Journey" section walks users through three clear stages — Considering a Career at CBP, Preparing to Relocate, Explore Your New Community — turning a stressful process into a structured path.
Restrained, Government-Appropriate Visual Language — A muted palette of deep navy (#222222), soft blue (#EDF3F9), and clean off-whites combined with Satoshi typography keeps the design official and professional while feeling modern and uncluttered. Accent peach illustrations on Quick Facts icons add warmth without compromising the formal tone.
Fully Responsive Across Devices — Officers on the move check facility info from their phone, families compare neighborhoods on a tablet at the kitchen table, and HR staff review listings from a desktop. Every page adapts cleanly across all three.
